A Quebec first
To complete one part of his project, Yanick Charette needed a special permit from the Canadian Wildlife Service to capture, band and colour-mark his hummingbirds. As a prerequisite, he had to perform this operation on at least one hundred birds, under the supervision of a highly experienced mentor. But there was no one he could work with in Québec; no one here had the permit. So, last May, he took a trip to Vancouver Island. There, working with a local hummingbird expert, he made more than 125 Rufous hummingbird captures in a day and a half, giving him the experience he needed to get his permit.
